Task 9: Front Cover Construction PROGRESS 1

Beginning of Construction for Front Cover

This is the beginning stage of construction for my front cover. I first removed the masthead design background since I print screen it from dafont, therefore it was not transparent so you could see the white background and border.

This was the masthead fonts style I am going to use for my front cover:

This is where I began to erase the white background so it become transparent.

And this was the results

After I decided to re-touch the photoshoot of the model, since she had some blemishes.

Task 8: Additional Photography

Additional Photography

This week I went out to Brick Lane and Shoreditch High Street to take picture for my additional photography. The reason why I went to Brick Lane and Shoredith is because they are known for their contemporary culture, street fashion and many indie scenes come from there. This is why I thought Brick Lane and Shoreditch would be a great ideas for location settings, as it'll relate and it will be recognised by my target audience.

These are the locations where I was taking my picture:

And these are a example of photos which I've taken during the locations:

Overall, these images that are shown above I will be using them for my contents page as an additional photography. The reason why I've chosen these images is because they are very well linked with the concept of 'contemporary' culture in which it'll relate more towards my target audience. Also I find them very suitable for my features article on my contents page.

Task 8: Photography - Chosen Image (MAIN COVER)

This is the image I have chosen for my main cover. The reason why I've chosen this image is because her pose is very unique and the model costume looks very hip, as I felt that it really do resemble what models from indie-genre music magazine would wear (from my case studies of CLASH, and other research of indie-genre music magazine). Also I find this shot very appropriate as many magazine tend to have MS or MCU, in addition I like the fact that direct mode of address was used as the model can lead to a interaction with the readers; allowing the readers to feel like they are engaging with the model.

Task 8: Photography - Contact Sheet

These are my photography contact sheet for my main cover/content and DPS. At first I wasn't very sure if my main cover star should be in a duo or an artist, therefore I took additional photoshoot of different models. I've also thought that if I decided my main cover star will be an artist, I would use the other model part of my content page.

An charming and upcoming artist has debut; before she entered the music industry she was already famous within the contemporary culture of her distinctive fashion sense. Her tracks from SoundCloud received enormous fame due to her unique and exotic vocal talent, and her tracks was spreading across social networking. At last, an record labels recruited her and now she has finally debut and already doing well in the chart and the indie scene. I will use white backdrop as it'll show the artist pureness to reflect her ages, since the artist is really young and already successful. Additionally, her costume reflect to her career before she started singing, since her clothing looks very hip which emphasises the contemporary culture trend; so it'll allow the readers to engage more with the artist.

Task 7: Audience Feedback

In conclusion, I received really good feedback for my magazine proposal as I had covered all the points and presented my presentation in depths and well explanation. I used Prezi part of the technologies to present my presentation as it was a creative software which suit the concept of TUNES magazine therefore it'll appeal to my classmates, also prezi was really useful in terms of illustrating my points which enable and helped me to explain my points in more depths. The improvements I got was that I should have explained my pricing in a lot more detail, and to what extend it'll be suitable for the young sector of my readers; as my target audience is aimed at majority of young adults.

Task 6: Magazine Proposal - PRESENTATION

Audience Feedback:

1.) Did I cover all the main points?
2.) What did you like about my presentation?
3.) Would you buy 'TUNES'?
4.) Any suggestion for improvements?

Task 6: Magazine Proposal - FINALS

Task 6: Flat Plan - House Styles (DRAFT)

These are some examples of my flat plan for my magazine house styles.

Front Covers:

Contents:

DPS:

Task 6: Color Scheme (DRAFT)

These are 3 colour schemes I am thinking of using for my music magazine. I've thought of using analogous pastel colours. Because it'll blend in well, also it looks very artistic which I thought it'll suit precisely well for my magazine concept. The chosen colour scheme I am going to use for my magazine is the one that's circled in red; the reason why I've chosen this colour scheme is because my main cover stars is going to be a girl, also she has a very feminine and bright personality and I thought it'll emphasis my main cover star character very well. In addition, I thought this colour scheme would blend in very well as the colours looks innovative and it'll suit my magazine concept.

Task 6: Masthead (DRAFT)

These are some examples of masthead design I am thinking of using for my music magazine. At first I thought of using sans-serif fonts, because it looks modish which I thought it'll suit well for my magazine concept. However, I've also thought of using serif fonts because it looks a bit vintage and vogue and so it'll make my magazine looks much more classy. On the other hands, I've also thought of using the bottom-left fonts because it looks very artistic, however it looks very childlike and immature; therefore it would not fit precisely well with my magazine concept. Lastly, the chosen fonts I am going to use for my masthead is the one that's circled in red; the reason why I've chosen this fonts is because, it is a serif fonts which give a vintage and yet artistic feels, also it looks very neat and organised which I thought it will fit perfectly well for my magazine concept.

Task 6: Fat Plan

I have completed my flat plan which includes 40 pages in my magazine. The reason why there is 40 pages is because my magazine will not be monthly released, but every 2 months instead. Because there is a lot of pages, therefore my magazine will be much expensive than any other music magazine due to the costs of paper; however, for people who view my magazine online it will be brought cheaper than buying it in a stores. For advert I have chosen majority brands that would appeal to my target audience, since it'll directly links with my audience profile.

  • They will blend in to the backdrop if you stand too near - make sure your model is standing away from the backdrop
  • The light are always switch off in the classroom
Studio flash -
  • Trinity studio flash head; they will 'ping' if the flash is on.
  • To test the if the flash is on, click the 'Test' buttons
  • There will be a musical notes; the beat - it allow to make a 'ping' to make sure the flashes is on

3 point lighting -
  • Key light/ Main light: An effect to add more light to the subject area
  • Fill light (it has a grid): It allows to take the shadows out, and fill in the light. It also allow to spread the lights out evenly to get an evenly light.
  • Hair light: It has a snoot a dented cone - it bounce light to the subject hair, which allow to separate the model from the backdrop so the model doesn't look flat.
  • Two soft boxes distributes light

Task 5 (b): Distribution of Magazines

Magazine Distribution Methods

Publishers:

Magazine publishers are responsible for making their publications an editorial and commercial success. In the UK there are four large publishers and a number of smaller institutions as well. The main four publishers are Bauer, National Magazine, Conde Nast and IPC. The magazine publishers also define the editorial position and manage business operations so that the magazine provides readers with high quality content while maximising revenue and profit. They also manage relationship with the advertisers as advertising is a critical source of income for the magazines; publishers would recruit an advertising sales team to sell space to advertisers or their agencies. In addition, circulation figures help publishers to plan how many issues to produce and distribute.

Distribution Networks:

Each publisher uses a network of distribution, who manages the flow of magazines from the printer to the final newsstand. The most common form of magazine distribution is through displaying magazines on shop shelves, generally stocked in shops such as newsagents, convenience stores, supermarkets or larger high street shops such as WHSmiths.

Sale or Return:

Sale or Return is the system used by magazine and newspaper distributors with newsstands. If less than the set number sell (e.g. 10) the rest of the magazines will be returned. This is a very wasteful and environmentally damaging system for the distributor, because many copies are going to be wasted and there will be no profit for the distributor. However, the people in the retail benefits from this method as there will be no cost to the retailer. This is why many shops agreeing placing various magazines in their shops.

Direction Distribution (Freemiums):

This is an effective way of distribution, as the magazine goes directly into the customer's hand; these are usually given out at stations or other busy public locations. Since the Freemiums are free, therefore the publisher needs to include more adverts to insure high profits. The most common directly distributed magazine is the Shortlist.

Subscription – Postal:

Regular readers of magazines, particularly niche publications may wish to subscribe to a number of issues, and have the magazines regularly posted to them. Another example of a subscription is the postal subscription which is a beneficial for the publisher, because it is a generated sale. No copies go to waste this way, and it is also beneficial to the costumer because it is directly delivered to the front door, so the reader does not have to go to a shop. On the other hand, it is cheaper than buying every issue separately, as they often include gifts for subscriptions.

Online Publishing:

A modern way of magazine distribution; it is one of the most successful methods.  Readers often have to participate in a subscription model, which can be paid or for free as a trial. There are different variations of the online method, for example: E-zines is an electronic version of a magazine, as it looks like a magazine and it is accessible online. You can turn the pages via a mouse click, zoom in and out also there is adverts and page numbers etc. For music magazines, RWD is a good example as these e-zines are usually free, and they will have electronic features such as video clips and hyperlinks that redirect the reader to another source. Additionally, another method of distribution is to subscribe to a Kindle or iPad version of the magazines, this replaces a physical copy and works like e-books.

Apps & Electronic Brand extension:

Many magazines now have smartphone or tablet apps with some or all the content available in the hard copy of the magazine. These may be linked via a smart QR code on the front cover of a magazine, which are the most efficient ways nowadays. Furthermore, most magazines now extend their brand with an online presence, for example the social networking like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Tumblr is a very helpful way to extend the magazine brand, as it allows the audience to get fully involved in the magazine and creates a community of fans in which they can interact with, also the presence on social media will ensure many more people are aware of the magazine.

Task 5 (a): Magazine Newsstand

Magazine Newsstand

I visited one of my local Tesco to find a magazine newsstand. The music magazines were placed at a preferred eye-level; therefore it is much easier for the readers to spot a music magazine they want to read. I realised that the magazines were laid out accordingly to their genres, for example Rock music magazine such as ‘Mojo’ and ‘Terrorizer’ were next to each other, while popular music magazine like ‘Q Magazine’ were next to the Rock music magazine to show the competition between them. I also realised that magazines on the bottom part of the newsstand have free gifts such as CD’s so it encourage the buyers to buy their magazines, as many music magazines on the newsstand did not have free gifts. I also realised that popular music magazines are mostly placed in the front, whereas less popular music magazines are placed at the back. This displays that much more recognisable magazines are easier for the buyers to spot the section of where the music magazines is placed on the newsstand. Despite the less popular magazines are placed at the back, however most of the less popular magazine tends to have much bigger and bolder mastheads so at the same time it can catch the attention to the buyers, as most of the buyers would likely buy the popular music magazines as it is recognisable and well-known. The magazine newsstand did not place it over each other however you can clearly see that the rock magazines placed their free gifts on the lower-third left, just in case if other newsagent placed the magazine over each other so the ‘free gifts’ would catch the buyers attention.

In addition, the magazine newsstand placed the magazine in a full view so the buyers can see how the magazine in general looks like; this is where I also realised the images on the front cover are the main unique selling points, because it is more likely to catch the buyers’ attention, for instant popular magazine like ‘Q Magazines’ uses popular cover star so it can get more buyers. Lastly, for the cover lines most of the magazines use different font’s style and colours to point out the main features that’ll includes inside the magazine, since there is a competition between all the music magazine on the newsstand; therefore, most of the magazine would select a ‘main features’ of their cover lines to persuade and curious the buyers.
