Task 3: College Magazine Analysis

Today in class we were planning for our preliminary task which were to produce a college (LSC) magazine, and the target audience will be targeted to college students.

This college magazine is targeted to mostly student, as the title of the magazine called ‘STUDENT’. The slogan stated ‘By Student, For Students’ which clearly shows that their main target audience is targeted to student only.

FRONT COVER

Masthead: Bold and quirky fonts. The colour is black, which give a ‘classy’ feels and it also give a more ‘mature’ feels to it. It also contrasts along with other font colours, so it looks presentable.

Colour Scheme: It has 4 colours scheme, and these colour scheme matches with the main model hair so it contrast along with it, and make the magazine front cover look more stylish.  The colours is very vibrant which give a lively and modish feels toward it, because if the magazine colour scheme is too dull it will bore the audience; since college magazine are mainly targeted to young adults, therefore the colours and mood tend to be eye-catching so it reflect to the target audience character

Main Images: The main model customs and looks is very hip and trendy, this magazine does not have the ‘stereotypical’ view as a college student; this is when the main model would hold a huge stack of books, and look very nerdy. But this magazine breaks the ‘stereotypical’ view as a college student. Despite this magazine did not use the ‘stereotypical’ view as a college student, however the ‘Student’ magazine still use the stereotypical view as a young adults; the view would be majority of young adults has vibrant hair colours and contemporary fashion sense.

Cover line/Sell lines: The main cover line is “LOOK GOOD! This season’s fashion tips” because it is the biggest font out of all the other fonts, also it reflect to the main image because the mise-en-scene looks very hip and fashionable. The sell lines would be “GET LEARNING! The best revision tips” because this magazine is targeted to college students, and certainly the magazine would contain some tips and advice for revision. On the other hand, the sell lines is no in front of the model, apart from the buffer; so the readers can see clearly what she is wearing and how her hair looks like, since the main image is usually the first unique selling points.

Uses of Puffer: The puff stated “WIN AN IPOD TOUCH” and it is used so it can promote the magazine, this also persuade the audience to buy the magazine because there is a ‘free gifts’ to be given and you can only get this ‘free gifts’ if you enter it through this magazine. ‘Student’ magazine used the puffer because it tends to stand out more, so it will catch the audience attention first.

Barcode/ Price/ Dates: There are no barcode, price or dates; it could suggest that this magazine was ‘free’ and it’s only available for students that only study at that school.

CONTENTS PAGE

Main Image: There are 4 images; the top one is the main image because it is the biggest out of all other images. The main model has the same outfit style as the main model from the front cover, for example both of them has vibrant hair style. Most of the image shot is MCU and their expression look bright and happy, so it makes the readers feel welcome when they read the magazine.

Colour Scheme: The colour scheme for the layout has 2 colours but the image is very colourful like the front cover, so it reflect to the target audience character. The colour scheme for the layout is very simplistic as it has minimal colours, so it contrasts along with the other images because if the colour scheme for the layout was too colourful and vivid, it would look disorganised.

Layout: It has 2 columns and the style was kept simple. Each section of the textboxes has a subheading and a description of what it would feature in the magazine; it also has a locating numbers next to it.
